Old Ruins es una banda que comenzó inicialmente como un proyecto paralelo de Alexander Czernik y Christian “Kraje” Krajewski que fusiona la esencia del black metal con algunos elementos de heavy metal y melódico. Este quinteto publicó el año pasado su álbum debut “Always Heading East”. La Magia Absalón platicó con su líder, vocalista y guitarrista acerca de sus orígenes y su propuesta musical.
LMA: Muchas gracias por aceptar esta entrevista para La Magia Absalon. Old Ruins está promocionando su álbum debut “Always Heading East” cuya inspiración proviene de un videojuego titulado ‘Diablo’. ¿De dónde surge ese interés por crear un álbum conceptual?
Kraje: Tenemos que darte las gracias por la entrevista al principio.
La idea de crear un álbum sobre el concepto de este videojuego estuvo en mi mente durante muchos años.
El argumento sobre el vagabundo oscuro, antaño un gran héroe que se enfrentó a Diablo y sus sabuesos del infierno, y ahora poseído por el mismísimo señor oscuro, me atrapó desde la primera escena que vi.
Algún día escribí algunos riffs oscuros en mi guitarra. En cierto modo suena a black y heavy metal al mismo tiempo.
Mientras jugaba crecía más y más la idea de que estos riffs encajaban perfectamente con la atmósfera de este juego.
Y lo que puedes escuchar en "Always Heading East" es el resultado de unos cuantos años de trabajo.
LMA: En un inicio, Old Ruins estaba concebido como un ‘proyecto de estudio’ entre el baterista Alexander Czernik y el cantante/guitarrista Christian Krajewski. ¿Cómo se dio este cambio de perspectiva al interior del grupo que derivó en la adición del bajista Oliver Krajewski y el guitarrista Ersin Kara contribuyendo a que la banda se convirtiera en un proyecto de tiempo completo?
Kraje: Así es.
Al principio sólo queríamos crear algunas canciones y grabarlas.
Pero cuando nuestro batería le enseñó las primeras grabaciones a Ersin, quiso unirse a la banda.
Era la primera vez en años que volvía a hacer voces guturales, y él me dijo años antes, que cuando volviera a hacer estas voces de alguna manera, le gustaría unirse al proyecto.
Después de que Ersin se uniera le pregunté a mi hermano si estaba interesado en un nuevo proyecto y en tocar el bajo.
Hasta el día de hoy su única experiencia en una banda de metal la hizo como vocalista de nuestra banda de power metal "Firestorm" que está en espera.
Aceptó el reto y desde ese momento trabajamos en el concepto de "Always Heading East"
LMA: “Always Heading East” es un álbum que tiene como base el Black Metal influenciado por elementos de otros géneros como el heavy, doom y melódico. ¿Quiénes consideran sus principales influencias musicales y que ayudaron de cierta forma a consolidar la propuesta musical de la banda?
Kraje: Verdaderamente puedo decir que la mayor influencia viene de los proyectos paralelos de los inmortales Abbath y Demonaz.
Hay un álbum "Between Two Worlds" de la banda llamada "I".
La mayoría de los Riffs de este álbum fueron escritos para Inmortal pero nunca llegaron a un disco de Inmortal. Y luego está "March of the Norse" de Demonaz que también trae los riffs duros y fríos de Inmortal, pero de una manera pesada/épica, si sabes lo que quiero decir.
La primera vez que escuché estos discos fue como magia para mis oídos.
No tan rapido como la musica que normalmente prefiero, pero la pesadez de esta combinacion de heavy y black metal fue impresionante para mi.
LMA: ¿Cómo es el proceso creativo detrás de Old Ruins? Realizo la pregunta porque es interesante como plantean esta atmósfera densa y oscura característica del Black Metal, pero también se perciben algunos momentos cargados de partes rítmicas y riffs bastante pegadizos dentro del álbum.
Kraje: Es una buena pregunta, porque cuando empezamos a trabajar en una canción no sabemos cómo sonará al final.
A veces nos sorprendemos a nosotros mismos.
Por ejemplo, nuestra canción “Risen from the Grave”, no te creerías cómo sonaba la primera versión de la canción.
Cambiamos algunas partes y toda la pesadez de la canción cambió.
Tenemos esta parte sorpresa en medio de la canción, que es muy heavy y nadie esperaría que estuviera ahí.
Cuando escribí este riff, normalmente estaba planeado para otra canción.
No recuerdo cuándo fue, pero tuve la idea de que este riff encajaría perfectamente en medio de “Risen from the grave”.
Nos encanta el resultado de este experimento y así es como trabajamos.
A menudo nos preguntamos “¿podemos hacerlo así?”.
Y la única respuesta que podemos dar es “¡por qué no! “
Nos encanta crear una atmósfera oscura, pero también nos encanta cómo las partes rítmicas pegadizas sorprenden a los oyentes.
LMA: ¿Cómo ha sido la respuesta por parte de la prensa especializada respecto a “Always Heading East” así como de los fanáticos ahora que han tenido la oportunidad de presentarse en vivo?
Kraje: Los comentarios sobre "Always Heading East" son increíbles.
Hemos recibido un montón de críticas positivas de distintos medios impresos o webzines de todo el mundo.
Y hemos conseguido muchos fans nuevos con este disco.
Tocamos en un concierto de presentación organizado por nuestro sello.
Entre el público sólo había unas pocas personas que conocían nuestro EP.
Pero después del concierto casi todo el mundo estaba flasheado.
Siempre queremos trasladar el ambiente del escenario al público.
Y funcionó muy bien.
Vendimos muchos discos después de este concierto.
LMA: ¿Han considerado la posibilidad de seguir explorando el videojuego ‘Diablo’ con la intención de crear más álbumes conceptuales?
Kraje: Por supuesto, y aún tenemos algunas ideas para profundizar en el concepto.

INTERVIEW: OLD RUINS
Old Ruins is a band that initially started as a side project of Alexander Czernik and Christian "Kraje" Krajewski that fuses the essence of black metal with some heavy metal and melodic elements. This quintet released their debut album "Always Heading East" last year. La Magia Absalon spoke with their leader, vocalist and guitarist about their origins and their musical proposal.
LMA: Thank you very much for accepting this interview for La Magia Absalon. Old Ruins is promoting their debut album "Always Heading East" whose inspiration comes from a video game called 'Diablo'. Where does this interest in creating a concept album come from?
Kraje: We have to thank you for the Interview at first.
The idea to create an album on the concept of this video game was in my mind for many years.
The storyline about the dark wanderer, once a great hero who faced diablo and his hounds of hell, and now possessed by the dark lord himself, caught me from the first cutscene I saw.
Someday I wrote some dark riffs on my guitar. In a way it sounds like black and heavy metal at the same time.
While I was playing the idea that this riffs fits perfect to the atmosphere of this game grows more and more.
And what you can hear on “Always Heading East” is the result of a few years of work.
LMA: Old Ruins was originally conceived as a 'studio project' between drummer Alexander Czernik and singer/guitarist Christian Krajewski, how did this change of perspective within the band lead to the addition of bassist Oliver Krajewski and guitarist Ersin Kara and helped the band become a full time project?
Kraje: That’s correct
Originally we just wanted to create some songs and record them.
But when our drummer showed the first rough recordings to Ersin he wanted to join the band.
It was the first time for years that I did guttural vocals again, and he told me years before, that when I would do this vocals again in any way, he would like to join the project.
After Ersin joined I asked my brother if he is interested in a new project and in playing the bass guitar.
To this day his only experiences in a metal band he made as the lead singer of our power metal band “firestorm” which is on hold.
He accepted the challenge and from that point we worked on the concept for “Always Heading East”
LMA: "Always Heading East" is a Black Metal based album influenced by elements of other genres such as heavy, doom and melodic. Who do you consider your main musical influences and who helped in a way to consolidate the band's musical proposal?
Kraje: Truly I can say that the biggest influence comes from the side projects of Immortals Abbath and Demonaz.
There is this album “Between Two Worlds“ by the Band called “I”
Most of the Riffs of this Album where written for immortal but never made it on a Immortal record. And then there is “March of the Norse” from Demonaz which also brings the harsh and cold immortal riffs, but I a heavy/epic kind of way , if you know what I mean.
When I first listened to these records it was like magic to my ears.
Not as fast as the music that I normally preferred, but the heaviness of this heavy and black metal combination was awesome to me.
LMA: How is the creative process behind Old Ruins? I ask the question because it is interesting how you pose this dense and dark atmosphere characteristic of Black Metal, but there are also some moments loaded with rhythmic parts and quite catchy riffs within the album.
Kraje: That is a good question because when we start working on a song we don’t know how it sounds in the end.
Sometimes we surprise ourselves to.
For example, our song “Risen from the Grave”, you wouldn’t believe how the first version of the song sounded.
We changed a few parts and the whole heaviness of the song changed.
We have this surprise part in the middle of the song, which is very heavy and no one would expect it there.
When I wrote this riff it was usually planned for different song.
I can’t remember how our when it was, but I had the idea this riff would perfectly fit in the middle of “Risen from the grave”.
We love the result of this experiment and that’s how we work.
Often we ask ourselves “can we do it like that?”
And the only answer we can give is “why not! “
We love to create a dark atmosphere but we also love, how catchy rhythmic parts surprises the listeners.
LMA: How has been the response from the specialized press regarding "Always Heading East" as well as from the fans now that you have had the opportunity to perform live?
Kraje: The regards to “Always Heading East” are awesome.
We got a lot of positive reviews from different print or webzines all over the world.
And we got a lot of new fans with this record.
We played a Release show organized by our label.
In the audience, there were just a few people who knew our EP.
But after the show nearly everyone was flashed.
We always want to transfer the atmosphere from the stage to the audience.
And it worked very well.
We sold a lot of records after this show.
LMA: Have you considered the possibility of further exploring the 'Diablo' video game with the intention of creating more concept albums?
Kraje: Of course and we are still have some ideas how to dive deeper in the concept.
