Methedras es una banda italiana de thrash metal con varios años dentro de la industria. El cuarteto presentó el año pasado su último álbum de estudio “Human Deception”. La Magia Absalón platicó con la banda acerca de este trabajo y el proceso creativo detrás de ello.
LMA: Gracias por la entrevista para La Magia Absalón. Methedras se encuentra promocionando “Human Deception”, su último álbum de estudio. ¿Podrían platicarnos acerca del proceso creativo detrás de este álbum?
Methedras: El proceso creativo ha sido muy satisfactorio y lleno de notas altas, decidimos improvisar durante los ensayos mucho más que el pasado, esto nos permitió estar todos más metidos en el proceso, dando a las canciones mucha más variedad y colores, el resultado es lo que se puede escuchar en el disco.
LMA: ¿Cómo se ha sentido la banda ante la respuesta de “Human Deception”?
Methedras: Hasta ahora las opiniones sobre el álbum son muy satisfactorias para nosotros, los críticos notaron todos los cambios más importantes en las nuevas canciones, y a los fans les gusta el hecho de que mantengamos nuestra identidad mientras la hacemos crecer y enriquecer con nuevos elementos.
LMA: Han pasado cerca de cinco años entre la publicación de “Human Deception” y su antecesor “The Ventriloquist” ¿Qué factores influyeron para que se prolongara la publicación entre un álbum y otro?
Methedras: Bueno, en este caso concreto un factor importante ha sido sin duda el cierre por pandemia, durante el cual toda la humanidad experimentó años de frustración y aislamiento, ralentizando todo tipo de procesos, incluido el esfuerzo artístico para elaborar y refinar la música y las canciones. Otro aspecto importante ha sido para nosotros los continuos cambios de formación sufridos justo antes y después de la pandemia, a los que afortunadamente hemos podido responder de la mejor manera posible, añadiendo dos músicos increíbles y profesionales que, en consecuencia, ayudaron a aumentar las habilidades y el potencial de la banda, pero admito que Methedras suele tomarse mucho tiempo -mejor dicho, el tiempo justo- para componer un nuevo álbum.
LMA: Un aspecto que me parece interesante es que retoman este sonido característico del thrash metal y lo fusionan con algunos elementos death y Groove creando una propuesta musical más dinámica y fresca. ¿Qué bandas influyeron en la consolidación de su estilo musical?
Methedras: Se trata más de los géneros que de las bandas, siempre quisimos mezclar el thrash metal de la Bay Area y el death metal melódico de Suecia, pero seguro que bandas como Machine Head, Testament, Soilwork y Carcass influyeron en nuestras canciones a lo largo de los años.
LMA: La banda cuenta con cerca de tres décadas de presencia en la escena musical, lo que ha permitido compartir escenario con leyendas como Morbid Angel, Sepultura, Onslaught, Exodus y Overkill solo por mencionar algunos, ¿Cómo han influido este acercamiento con bandas importantes en la escena para fortalecerse como banda?
Methedras: Hemos tenido la suerte de compartir escenario con un montón de bandas históricas del metal, todas estas oportunidades nos hicieron ver de cerca cómo una banda profesional puede trabajar en el escenario y cómo es posible soportar una presión increíble en las giras, es algo así como aprender directamente sobre el terreno.
LMA: ¿Cuáles son los planes a futuro para la banda?
Methedras: Actually, we are still promoting the album, thinking about releasing a couple more singles and spreading the music on social media. In the meantime, we are working towards 2024 to organize some gigs at European festivals and hopefully a tour in the following autumn.

INTERVIEW: METHEDRAS
Methedras is an Italian thrash metal band with several years in the industry. The quartet presented last year their latest studio album "Human Deception". La Magia Absalon talked to the band about this work and the creative process behind it.
LMA: Thank you for the interview for La Magia Absalon. Methedras is currently promoting "Human Deception", your latest studio album, could you tell us about the creative process behind this album?
Methedras: The creative process has been very satisfying and full of high notes, we decided to jam during rehearsals much more than the past, this allowed us to be all more into the process, giving to the songs way more variety and colors, the result is what you can listen on the album.
LMA: How has the band felt about the response to "Human Deception"?
Methedras: So far the opinions about the album are very satisfying for us, the critics noticed all the most important changes in the new songs, and the fans like the fact that we keep our identity while we make it grow and enrich with new elements.
LMA: It's been about five years between the release of "Human Deception" and its predecessor "The Ventriloquist". What factors influenced the length of time between albums?
Methedras: Well in this specific case one major factor has been for sure the pandemic lockdown, during which the whole humanity experienced years of frustration and isolation, slowing down every kind of process, including the artistic effort in order to craft and refine music and songs. Another important aspect has been for us, the continuous lineup changes suffered right before and after the pandemic, which we’ve luckily been able to reply to in the best way possible, adding two incredible and professional musicians who consequently helped to increase the band skills and potentials, but I admit Methedras usually takes a lot of time – better to say the right amount of time – in order to write a new album.
LMA: One aspect that I find interesting is that they retake this characteristic thrash metal sound and fuse it with some death and groove elements creating a more dynamic and fresh musical proposal. What bands influenced the consolidation of your musical style?
Methedras: It’s more about the genres than the bands, we always wanted to mix the thrash metal from the Bay Area, and the melodic death metal from Sweden, but for sure bands like Machine Head, Testament, Soilwork and Carcass influenced our songs through the years.
LMA: The band has nearly three decades of presence in the music scene, which has allowed them to share the stage with legends such as Morbid Angel, Sepultura, Onslaught, Exodus and Overkill just to mention a few. How has this approach with important bands in the scene influenced you to become stronger as a band?
Methedras: We’ve been lucky enough to share the stage with a lot of historic metal bands, all these opportunities made us see at a closer glance how a professional band can work on stage and how it is possible to bare an incredible pressure on tour, it’s kinda like learn directly on the field.
LMA: What are the future plans for the band?
Methedras: Actually, we’re still promoting the album, thinking to release a couple more singles and spreading the music on socials. In the meanwhile, we are working for the 2024 to arrange some gigs in European festivals and hopefully a tour in the following autumn.
